Handicap 4 Junior Results
Six runners and three families were represented in the Junior race as the Pennine Junior section demonstrated yet again its
indifference to adverse weather conditions.
It was clear to the route markers as their faces froze in the icy spindrift at the top of the first field and they struggled
through deep snow that would be up to the waists of some of the competitors that the normal route would have to be shortened
if we weren't to lose half the field to hypothermia, consequently the loop up onto the top field was abandoned, which proved
to be a wise decision looking at the times taken.
Everyone in turn started off at a run up the initial hill but soon found themselves slowing down and floundering in the
loose snow and it didn't become a race until they vanished into the whirling spindrift along the wall. This was followed by
a struggle over a large snowdrift and a downhill battle to stay upright on the final run-in.
Matthew Warhurst had a fine run to finish first in the second fastest time, although he had to produce a final burst after
he fell just before the line with Joe Brooks descending fast behind him for second place and the fastest time. Amy Brooks
skipped over most of the snow to collect third place and third fastest time, being followed in by Jim Topliss, Sarah
Warhurst and Emily Topliss - well done all of them.
The hot Ribena was much appreciated, as were the chips and the fire at the pub.
Many thanks once again to the parental assistance and to Sam Butler - definitely the first time we've had a race sweeper on
skis - and I look forward to seeing what happens at the next race at Hayfield on 14th February.
