Pennine Winter Handicap Race 1

Little Hayfield - Saturday 25th October 2008

A good start to the Series with a healthy turnout of 28 Seniors and 21 Juniors, despite a very, very adverse weather forecast, which undoubtedly put some people off. In the event, although there was a cold wind and a few spots of rain later on it was nowhere near as bad as expected and a good time was had by all - including our two errant Juniors who added about half of Lantern Pike to their route, but more of that in the Junior report.
Mel Cranmer used his vast local knowledge and silken tongue to take best advantage of his (retrospectively) clearly overgenerous handicap by speeding round to come home in first place, followed very soon by Jo Bowen and Neil Goldsmith in second and third. Fastest time of the day was posted by Nick Craig in a sprint finish with Mark Williams to get 54 minutes, one of only two people to get under the hour mark, the other being Geoff Briggs. Rob Taylor arrived back with a wet map, having used its poly bag to hold the hundredweight (no metric measurements in these reports !!) or so of mushrooms he'd collected en route and the Lantern Pike was a haven of warmth and hospitality for the post-race gathering.
Many thanks to Richard, especially for the VERY accurate handicapping and now that battle has been joined we can look forward to George Scott's production at Glossop on the 22nd November.
